About
The theatrical organization of the Alley Theater and the community arts collective Art Sanctuary announce their partnership in opening a new performance venue and art gallery at the Pointe at 1205 E. Washington Street in Louisville, Kentucky, in the heart of Butchertown.
Founded in Louisville, Kentucky in 2004, Art Sanctuary was established under the humanist principle that “Your Life is Your Art.” As a community arts collective, its mission is to provide support for local artists through promotions, events, and education. Art Sanctuary embraces all local artists who need a place to exhibit, perform, or create their original artwork, especially those who cannot obtain space to exhibit or perform from traditional sources because of financial or other limitations. Exhibitions and performances are non-juried and uncensored.
Art Sanctuary not only provides opportunity for connection and open-minded thinking for artists and audiences alike, the organization is committed to adding to the arts cultural flavor found in our Possibility City, as known as Louisville. Art Sanctuary supports the viability and vitality of the region’s art community and is a stand for keeping that scene alive and interesting.
The Alley Theater was formed in 1993 for the purpose of fostering original alternative performance works in the Louisville area and to offer local productions of progressive, previously established theatrical productions.
The Alley resided in the Highlands area of Louisville and served that community for under 4 years. In December of 2007, The Alley Theater returned to Louisville in a new facility located within the City Block Entertainment complex. During that year the Alley Theater ran productions throughout 2008, to determine if an alternative theatrical cabaret would be viable in the Louisville area. The Alley saw its audience base grow exponentially in 2008 and determined that investing in a full-time performance and visual arts complex was the next step in its growth.
Sixteen years after the Alley Theater first debuted in the Highlands, the organization is proud to bring the community a new multi-functional performance and visual art venue. In conjunction with Art Sanctuary, there will be Louisville Visual Art Openings, Theatrical, Improvisational and Multi-Disciplinary Productions as well as Televised Entertainment that will focus on local arts and charities.
The partnership between Art Sanctuary and Alley Theater became formal upon the leasing of space for productions and art events at the Pointe, a new facility in Butchertown. This effort is in large part due to the commitment of Alley Theater Artistic Director Scott Davis, Art Sanctuary’s Executive Director Lisa Frye and and Leasing Agent Aaron Tasman of Tasman Properties Group at the Pointe. The Pointe is an adaptive reuse of a historic industrial warehouse converted to a modern 90,000 square foot building. It incorporates green elements with individual spaces ranging from 900 to 10,000 square feet. A Historically Certified Redevelopment Project originally built almost a century ago, The Pointe offers a mix of the authentic styling which includes a contemporary, modern interior characterized by 18-foot high skylights, exposed brick walls and timber posts, large windows, and beautifully-finished hardwood floors.
Since the formation of their partnership, the Alley Theater and Art Sanctuary hosted a housewarming fundraiser in July that was a tremendous success. With over 600 people in attendance, the community showed its desire for a new venue that showcased local talent in visual and performing arts.
